Original Resident Application:

  1. Each applicant who applies for a license as an insurance agent or broker shall furnish at the time of filing his or her application, a certificate of evidence of satisfactory completion of a pre-licensing course of instruction consisting of forty (40) hours.
  2. Every applicant for licensure shall take the appropriate license examination within one (1) year fo completing a pre-licensing course. Self-study courses will be approved for pre-licensing and do not require a supervised examination.
  3. Courses necessary to obtain the nationally-recognized designations and other designations approved by the Commissioner are listed in Chapter 1, Title 26 of the DCMR, approved May 19, 2000, shall count as (16) credit hours upon successful completion of the national examination for each part.
Resident Renewal Application:
  1. All individuals licensed as insurance agents or brokers who wish to conduct business in the four major lines of insurance (property, casualty, life, and accident or health) must meet continuing education requirements.
  2. Completion of at least sixteen (16) credit hours within the two- calendar-year period preceding expiration of the license, or completion of twenty-four (24) credit hours, including six (6) credits for each major line of authority when licensed for both Life/Health and Property and Casualty insurance. No more than half of an applicant's CE requirements may be satisfied through courses sponsored by an insurance company. A credit hour is defined as fifty (50) minutes in the classroom.
  3. Exemptions for CE requirements may be given for individuals 65 years of age or older who have been continuously licensed for at least twenty-five (25) years, or licensees who meet one of the following requirements:
    1. Holds one of the designations in Chapter 1, Title 25 of the DCMR, effictive May 19, 2000.
    2. Is the majority shareholder of a corporation or the partner of a partnership that holds a license as an insurance agent or an insurance product nor actively participates in the day-to-day operations of the corporation or partnership.
