STATE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
- Designated Producers: May not apply for a license if they have previously
held the license in NY. Company appointments will no longer be required
before NY can issue a Life Agent or Property Agent license. Sponsoring
Insurance companies have 15 days from the date the agency contract is
executed or the first insurance application is submitted.
- NRL Applicants – If you previously held a license, resident or
non-resident, in the state of New York, you will need to send a paper
application to the state at this time. If you are not sure if you ever had a
license in NY, please contact the NY Dept of Insurance to verify. http://www.ins.state.ny.us/hpoffnos.htm
- Background Questions: Applicants answering "yes" to one or more
of the background questions may be required to provide additional
information to the Department. You will be notified by mail of what to send
and where to send it. Please do not forward any documents until you receive
a request from the Department.
- Licenses will be issued with an expiration date determined by date of birth:
o If you were born in an even numbered year, your license will expire on your birthday in an even numbered year.
o If you were born in an odd numbered year, your license will expire on your birthday in an odd numbered year
State fees will not be collected by NIPR (on behalf of NY) when a transaction is
declined according to NY business rules. Transaction fees and processing fees
will still apply. Violation of the following rules will result in a decline
response.
- Applicant must not have an inactive Non Resident
license in NY.
- Applicant must not have an inactive Resident
license in NY.
- Individual applicants - Applicant must be 18 years old or older as
determined from the applicant's Date of Birth.
- In NY, the property/casualty lines of authority on a broker license are - property, casualty, personal lines and baggage. However, Section 2104 (B) of the NY Insurance Law states that a broker with the property casualty lines of authority is authorized to write any and every line of authority except life insurance and variable life and variable annuity products.
