Original Resident Application:

Producer:

Individuals applying for the major lines of authority must complete the required pre-licensing education course and must successfully pass the Rhode Island producer exam.

Claim Adjusters:

Applicants for Claims Adjuster Licensing: Please note that RI is only reciprocal with the following states: CT, ME, MI, NH, NC, OK, SC, TX, VT, WY. If the applicant DOES NOT hold an active license in any reciprocal state the applicant must take and pass the RI exam. Please email ldesilets@dbr.state.ri.us with questions pertaining to reciprocity.

Appraiser:

Individuals applying for this license must take and pass the Rhode Island appraiser exam for the line of business requested, pre-licensing is not required for this license type.

Motor Vehicle Damage Appraiser:

Applicants for Motor Vehicle Damage Appraiser Licensing: All applicants must take and pass the RI Appraiser exam. Please email lesilets@dbr.state.ri.us with questions pertaining to appraiser licensing.

Title:

There is no pre-licensing or exam associated with this license type.

Surplus Lines:

Individuals: There is no pre-licensing or exam associated with this license type however the individual must hold a valid property and casualty producer license. A surplus lines broker bond in the sum of twenty five thousand dollars ($25,000) is required.

All Individual Licensees:

All Rhode Island residents must obtain a Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) check from the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office.

Business Entities:

Business entities, for all license types, must list a designated responsible licensed producer (DRLP) who has an active Rhode Island producer license. This individual must be licensed prior to the business entities online submission.

Resident Renewal Application:

Rhode Island renews licenses for a two-year period. Renewals are processed 60 days prior to expiration. Late renewals (more than 30 days after expiration) require a payment of a late fee. Licenses may be reinstated up to 12 months following their expiration. If your license has been inactive for one year or more you must reapply as a new applicant.

Individuals renewing producer licenses in any major line of authority must complete 24 hours of approved continuing education, which includes 3 hours in ethics. The continuing education provider is required to provide the producer with a Rhode Island state specific course completion certificate for each course taken.
