Applicant Can

  • Submit initial license application for individuals electronically.
  • Submit surplus lines for individuals.
  • Add lines of authority (amend) to an existing active license.
  • Reinstate/reapply through NIPR's Non-Resident License Application.

Business Rules

  • Applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years old or older as determined from the applicant's date of birth.

  • Applicant must provide a valid business email address.

  • South Dakota does not accept paper filings and no longer sends out a paper license. Applicants can view licensing information by going to the South Dakota state website and using the 'License Inquiry Service' at the bottom right corner.  From this page, applicants can also obtain information on how to print licenses. The cost to print a license is $5.50.

  • Applicants for the Variable Life and Variable Annuity line of authority (LOA) must supply a FINRA Central Registry Depository (CRD) number on the application.  If you need to verify your CRD number you may use the Broker Search feature found on FINRA's website.

  • Applicants applying for managing general agent must actively hold a South Dakota Insurance Producer license prior to applying.

  • Managing general agent may re-apply through NIPR's Non-Resident License Application at any time if the license is inactive.

  • Surplus Lines Broker applicants must hold an active Surplus Lines license in the resident state

  • Insurance Producer and Surplus Lines Broker applicants must late renew their license through NIPR's Non-Resident License Renewal Application if within one year of expiration. After one year, applicants may reinstate through NIPR's Non-Resident License Application.

  • If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax. All other required documentation must be forwarded directly to the state.
